The seven artists participating in this exhibition, Annette Corcoran, Sylvia
Hyman, Karen Dahl, Paul Dresang, David Furman, Glibert Kulish and Victor Spinski
are all masters of the ceramic medium. Their amazingly realistic sculptures
build on the historical tradition of trompe l'oeil, which translates from
French to "deceive the eye." Each artist creates, entirely from clay, objects
that appear to be real, objects that truly trick the eye into believing they
actually are what they appear to be. Mundane objects become extraordinary
through their articulation in clay, the sculptures so realistic that the subject
of each might fool the viewer into thinking that it is the original subject.
Both playful and intellectually serious, these artists toy with spectators'
seeing to raise questions about the nature of art and perception.
