The Clay Studio National 2016

May 6th - Jun 23rd, 2016

2016 marks the second iteration of The Clay Studio National, a biannual exhibition showcasing the best contemporary ceramic art being made in the United States now. Through this juried exhibition we highlight a diverse range of work, from functional to sculptural, and from traditional production techniques to cutting edge manufacturing technology.

The 2016 Clay Studio National was juried by Elisabeth R.Agro, Nancy M. McNeil Associate Curator of Contemporary Craft and Decorative Arts, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Jennifer Zwilling, The Clay Studio Curator of Artistic Programs.

Our goal was to choose work that represents the wide range of work being made today in the field of ceramic arts. The works chosen for the exhibition reflect our shared respect for rigorous critical discourse, the history of the field, and skillful execution. The power of Dylan Beck’s work is manifested through exacting technical skill, his use of current technologies and a staggering new perspective. Peter Olson combines classical forms with complex reuse of popular culture imagery. Jennifer Ling Datchuk draws on the history ofceramic arts and makes a bold statement about cultural perceptions ofbeauty. As a whole, the exhibition celebrates the many ways these artists express their personal artistic vision through nuanced and thoughtful combinations of concept and skill.
