A Knit Lab is an installation of knitting machines and supporting technologies in public spaces. Each lab is setup to explore new combinations of materials, community participation, and fabric applications as well as spark conversation about design, art, and manufacturing. The Clay Studio Knit Lab explores the possibilities of combining knitted fabric and ceramics. Knit Lab will be installed in The Clay Studio Gallery for three weeks - August 27th to September 13th.
Knit Lab Workshop

Join us for three hands-on workshops with artist, Andrew Dahlgren. Workshops during the Knit Lab residency allow participants to join in the process of knitting fabric, creating support structures, and coating the fabric with ceramic. Workshops are open to ages 8+ when accompanied by an adult. $10 per person, registration required.
In 2010, Artist Andrew Dahlgren focused his practice on machine knitting. What was most interesting to him was the wide range of potential applications of the knitted fabric. Rather then focusing just on fashion design, Andrew has been interested in how anything from architecture to furniture to housewares could be knitted. This led to the development of Knit Labs.
Andrew was invited by The Clay Studio to explore the possibilities of combining knitted fabric and ceramics. In May 2014 with support from The Clay Studio community - Andrew began his design process to develop a method of using these materials. A Knit Lab will be installed in The Clay Studio Gallery to put the new techniques to use. All steps of the production process (except firing) will take place in the gallery - knitting, making support structures, dipping, and glazing. We expect a range of objects to be produced and on display through out the installation and for a short time after.
