Winter Crop gathers the work of four accomplished potters. Michael Connelly (PA), Adam Field (CO), Robbie Lobell (WA) and Lilly Zuckerman (MT).
Michael Connelly's thrown pots are immediately playful the fluidity of the wet clay form preserved through to the final glaze firing. One sees how Connelly manipulates clay with a comfort and ease achieved only through years of committed practice. Connelly isn't afraid to experiment with each mark pushing his fingers through the clay or scratching into the surface of his glaze. The result of his confidence is a fresh body of work both playful and elegant.
Adams Fields soda and reduction fired porcelain vessels are masterfully thrown and exquisitely carved. His glazes sparkle with crystals formed in the firing. Alone with his carvings they look like snowflakes or ice stems growing in frozen puddles.
Robbie Lobell makes sturdy and time-tested flame ware pots truly made for food with forms that consider use. They are wonderfully inviting vessels becoming complete when food is cooked in them, the Square Baker with blueberry cobbler or the Stovetop Pot with a hearty stew, fulfilling our need to make, to touch, and to connect
Lilly Zuckerman's vessels, while pinched from earthy red clay are strangely reminiscent of 1950s Pyrex dishes, particularly those having the divider in the middle, designed to hold two vegetables. Using one of the most basic methods of construction when using clay, pinching, Zuckerman intuitively creates individually unique vessels.
