Jackie Brown: Brain Fruit

Nov 5th - Nov 28th, 2010

Juried Solo Exhibition Series
November 5 - November 28, 2010

Jackie Brown was the only artist selected this season for the The Clay Studio's 2010/2011 Juried Solo Exhibition Series. Brown received her MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2008 and holds a BA in Art and Anthropology from Hamilton College. During 2010 Jackie was an artist in residence at both the Pajama Factory in Williamsport, PA and at the Museum of Arts and Design in NYC. Her work has been included in several group exhibitions including international juried shows at The Shore Institute of the Contemporary Arts and the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey. Brown currently lives in Philadelphia and is now preparing for an upcoming solo exhibition at the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts.

In writing about her installation Brown states "My current work is installation-based and consists of hyper-organic forms that imply growth, movement and expansion. I strive for the work to be electrically charged, conveying a feverish sense of immediacy and vitality. Linear elements reach out into space and undulate between forms, while gelatinous parts ooze and drip from bulbous masses. I intend for the work to suggest perpetual mutation as if ripening and rotting systems have been cross-wired and are melding into new growths. Brain Fruit stems from an interest in human consciousness and the elasticity of the mind. Through the use of viscous, porous surfaces I attempt to provide a sense that the work is alive. The transformation of the materials I combine adds an important element of uncertainty that allows for the work to be poised between the real and the imagined. I aim to allow for a flight of imagination that is linked to the physicality of this world but also moves beyond it."
