Guy Michael Davis is a sculptor who recently graduated with his MFA from Ohio State University, Columbus, OH. He states, " Nature is my subject matter of which I mimic, reproduce and transform. Protruding off of the walls are multiple, tuberous branchlike forms with varying shape. The walls are textured by what seems to be sticks, coral, or roots. Encrusted like a grotto, the space has been invaded by artificial dendriforms. A tree structure is often used to represent a genealogical history. It can be a chart , a map, or an outline tracing an evolutionary path. In these projects each bird variation comes from the same digital roots, varied by scale and position, I have created a diverse family. Perching, twisting, bending, growing, and shrinking, there are genetic morphologies taking place within this artificial lineage."
"I have been working within the realm of multiplicity and installation. I accumulate pieces and parts, assemble and rearrange, mixing and matching playfully and inquisitively. My work has a relationship to the interiors and spaces that we dwell. These arborescent sculptures are dependent on architecture, it transforms previously vacant spaces, adding texture and bringing a sense of the outside, inside. I aim for a symbiotic relationship of the sculpture to the wall, and by creating versatile modules, individual units can be mounted and arranged to suit the space. Varying of levels of scale create depth and variety, which lends itself to pattern, and rhythms, adding to the optical captivation of the pieces."
"I am interested in the transformations that are taking place within the processes I have developed. New technologies allow me to be more efficient with time and materials and I have learned how many more possibilities there are in generating forms with these new tools. Ultimately my material of choice is translucent white porcelain, which is timeless and permanent. The material itself absorbs and reflects light, and when penetrated by light there is an interface, which subtly glows. Whiteness obscures and transcends reality, like the serenity of a landscape freshly covered with untouched snow. Whiteness is otherworldly like an apparition and rare like an albino."
