Jones is a studio artist living and working in Portland Oregon. He received his BFA from NYSCC at Alfred University, and his MFA in 2007 from Southern Methodist University, Houston, TX. Since that time he has taught and created functional tableware that he exhibits nationally.
Using a terra cotta body, Jones creates work using varied methods, throwing on the wheel and through the use of slabs. All of his forms are fairly simple, serving as canvases for his surface. There is a freshness in the handling of his chosen clay body and in the manner in which he surfaces his pieces, using white slip and white terra sigilatta, loosely applied, allowing some of the terra cotta body to show through to create some depth of surface. This white ground serves as a strong foil for the simple iconic forms he defines either through incising into the surface of his pots and or emphasized through the application of colored glaze, also applied loosely and exploiting their idiosyncratic properties.
