Nitza Rosario is a self-taught Caribeña ceramic artist born in the Bronx and raised in North Philadelphia. Nitza is from la Isla del Encanto, Puerto Rico, and her practice has allowed her to rekindle a sense of deep and meaningful ancestral connection. Her work draws from Taino and African influences, and the understanding of the centuries of ceramic history that exists in these cultures. Her mother is an inspiration as well, she is a well-known culturalist, and Nitza has early memories of playing with homemade playdough at home, a combination of flour, salt, and cornstarch. This love of ceramics grew in middle school when Nitza was chosen for a pottery arts course.

Since 1993, Nitza’s ceramic skill has grown along with her impact. She is not professionally trained and identifies her pottery abilities as a natural gift given passed on through her heritage. Her pieces can be found all over the world, and she notes the support of friends, family, and fellow ceramic artists in her growth. Nitza's mantra is “Clay Heals Minds”, and her life has been a practice in embracing this for herself, as well as introducing this concept to her community.

Nitza has taught in several studios including The Clay Studio, her home base, the Norris Square Civic Association, Black Hound Studio, and others where she prioritizes the impact of reintroducing ceramic arts to black and brown communities. Nitza’s most recent exhibition at The Clay Studio is called Mi Herencia, Mis Raices or My Heritage, My Roots.
